EC Italy LogoImpression of the day:

I was not entirely correct yesterday in my daily report. It turned out the qualification field is quite a bit further than Stroncone itself. It is up in the mountains in a place called Prati di Stroncone and it was about a 45 minute drive from the hotel, 1000 meters above sea level. We had very nice weather today, some clouds, quite a bit of wind and just a wee bit below sweaty. In the morning there was a bit of panic about the cars parked next to the entrance of the practice field. It turned out the area is a natural park and a protected area and parking was strictly illegal. Oops. So every car owner was searched until the lot on top was cleared and everybody was parked downhill. And the friendly guys from the Italian Penitentiary Police were shuttling archers and car owners back and forth to the parking lot down below. We have seen these busses before in Montevarchi, two years back and moving people from the hotels to the field. And typically one officer is driving his motorbike in front of a bus and stopping traffic at specific points. Archers don't feel like prisoners in these buses at all, but much more like vips being escorted through less imported traffic.

The equipment inspection was quite uneventful today. There was one sight with odd rings on the bolt keeping it up, that needed to be taped off, and I was pointed out another interesting sight as well, but that had an okay ruling during the World Championships last year. Other than that, no one tried to get a ruling about something new or interesting or different that needed attention. There was ample place on the shooting line as well, so everybody was able to test or check their bows at all available distances from 5 to 60 meters.

Tonight we conducted in the opening ceremony. A mediaeval drum band at the start of a lineup of all nations, and damsels, soldiers, horsemen and longbow archers followed. And then the other archers. The 20th century ones. And after a stop and go march from square to square in Terni a word of welcome, speeches in Italian and some English and the official opening by Mario Scarzella. And people were invited to visit the Archery Village I told you about yesterday. So, with the opening out of the way we are good to go.

Rumor is we will have a bit of rain tomorrow from 10:00 in the morning, until 10:30, an after that no more rain until next Monday. But hey, sometimes I get the impression that weather forecasting is nowhere near the science people claim or think it is.
