2nd Qualification round

09.30 - 24 targets marked distances (2 fields)

EC Italy LogoImpression of the day:

We completed the qualification today in Terni. The conditions were excellent. Just below 23 degrees in the shade, and around 40% humidity. Lots of blue sky and a couple of clouds. And lots of noisy cows that wanted their meadows back for grazing the grass. The cows did not wander into the field that much, but they checked out the practice area (which has a fence) and wandered towards the tent since they are getting used to the archers who pretty much leave them alone.

The archers switched courses today: archers that where in the blue course yesterday, shot yellow today and vice versa. The opinions were about the same as yesterday, nothing extreme, nothing really hard or really easy, but the Swedes pointed out something I did not mention in my previous report. They noticed each course has only about two targets downhill, the rest is horizontal or slightly up and that got a bit old. We can only hope they get their kicks out of the courses on tomorrows venue: Marmore Falls.

Lots of categories are short on participants to have a cut for the elimination round and that made the end result after the qualification less exciting than previous years. The compound division is plentiful but only in the mens division. 33 archers competing, 16 making the cut and place 15 and 16 was a shoot off for three archers: Gonzalo Sanchez from Spain, Jean-Philippe Dorget from France and Silvio Giorcelli  from Italy, the last one lost the shootoff. And in the recurve man division, 17 archers competing, and a shoot off between Czech archer Jakub Laciga and Claudio Dioguardi from Switzerland. Jakub won.

The last cut was in the Barebow Man division, 22 archers competing, 16 making the cut. Ending 17th was Hannu Kari from Finland, by just one point. I asked him if he was disappointed. He said "You know what, after shooting compound for so many years, this is my first year shooting Barebow at an international event. I learned a lot, and ended higher than I have ever ended shooting a Compound bow. I will improve and be back again next time, and _will_ make the cut!"

So, with the last day of qualification, we have the result in for the team matches next Friday. You can check the provisional line up for the teams at the Ianseo website (team captains can change the lineup based on best scores at will). But first we will shoot the first and second elimination round tomorrow at Marmore Falls. We are looking forward to it, we heard the rumors about the grandeur of the site.
