EC Italy LogoImpression of the day:

We moved to a new location today: Marmore Falls. I decided against finding out where the waterfalls are on my own and took the bus instead, together with the archers in my hotel and the one across the street. Actually there are four busses that drive the archers around. And, as I said before, the Penitentiary Police is escorting the four busses in convoy through town, with a couple of cars, and motor cycles. For the archers the novelty has almost worn of, but this was my first time in the guarded convoy. Boy, it was fun, talk about aggressive driving on steroids. I made a video on the way back and I should upload it, if it wasn't for the crappy internet connection we have. It takes us hours to upload our material, babysitting the upload because the hotel login system tries to be smarter than it should be. So, I need to reconnect a couple of times before I'm able to upload the lot (at about 20 KB per second). Thank you for your patience, I hope the late delivery of the photo material doesn't annoy you as much as it does us. In any case, the quality of the Internet connection is also responsible for the rather low number of photos in the albums. I'm very picky about what to photograph, delete on the spot, and delete at the hotel a second time. There is no way we would be able to get anything more to you, unless we skip sleep.

We had two courses in Marmore Falls, one in the forest, which was a bit dark and had interesting up and down shots and about two horizontal ones. The course around the cascades was by far the nicest course of the two. Pasi Ahjokivi told me he has been shooting at international events since 2005 and found this course the most beautiful ever. Well, for the entourage, shooting it was a different matter. Strangely enough, the waterfall that surrounds the archers is somewhat artificial. It is part of a hydroelectric power station and at night they literally shut off the waterfall, saving the water in a lake on top with a dam. At 8:30 in the morning, sirens are blown and then the water starts flowing. Quite bizarre.

After the morning session we had three shoot offs altogether. I don't have the data at hand to call this a record with the new (6) scoring system, but it feels like we have had a lot of them over the past two days. Check the Ianseo website for the results in detail, since I will only mention a few highlights. It was interesting to see that Thomas van Eil from the Netherlands barely made it, with a shoot off, to the second elimination round of the Compound Men, yet ending second in that round. The same is true for Sebastian Rohrberg from Germany: ending eighth in the first elimination round with only two points of margin, and winning the second elimination round. If that is tactics, it needs some cojones muy grandes. Oh, and while we are speaking Spanish, Sebastian Juanola Codina (the injured Spanish archer) started the day with only one goal in mind: if it is too hard to compete, he would spare himself for the team competition tomorrow. Yet he breezes through the first elimination round ending first, but just did not make the cut in the second elimination round ending fifth in this tournament. And the Italians saw Giuseppe Seimandi not making the cut in the first elimination round, struggling with target panic. So, someone we somehow expected to see in the finals, unfortunately did not make it. On the other side of the spectrum we did not expect to see Franz Haberler from Austria in the finals. Yet he rose above himself and made it through to the semifinals ending third in the elimination round. I don't know what the Austrian team had for breakfast, but they were on a roll today: Andrea Raigel will also be shooting finals, Laurence Baldauff nearly (lost the shoot off), and also Heribert Dornhofer is competing in the final. Mensch!

The individual finals will all be shot on Saturday. First we will shoot the team event tomorrow. Same misty place, same time, same cascades. But with bigger flags.
