Protests at match in Cadier
Quite a few archers protested during the match about the placement of target number 2 in the red course. What was it all about? They claimed that the angle of attack on the target was in their opinion unreasonably large. We must admit we helped a wee bit with filing that official complaint, although we obviously did not sign it, since none of the fieldarcher crew was a contestant in this match. The head judge declined the protest based on rule number 9.1.1.8. This rule stipulates "In all instances, regardless of the terrain, the buttress should be placed reasonably perpendicular to the athlete's line of sight from the shooting peg in order to present the target face's full picture..." Now this is interesting, but it does not tell us how much of an angle is reasonably perpendicular. Or in other words: how straight a target should be. As we expected the head judge concluded the rulebook did not give a reason to take the scores at target number two out of the results.

National coaches present during the match and also ourselves concluded the archers did had a point however (target number two had quite a bit of an angle to it and there were a few others one could argue about), and we and the coaches signed a document to the French Archery Association FFTA with a request for FITA to specify exactly how much "reasonably perpendicular" is, in response to this protest. This, by the way, is the only way you can get the rules committee to act: a local member should file a complaint, upon which the National Association should then contact FITA to get a ruling on the specific issue. We expect a clarification on the matter within two months from now and will keep you posted.
